The Avonlea Spectacle has gained a reputation as being an enthusiastic
supporter of causes devoted to L.M. Montgomery.
**In late 1996-early 1997, we held a fundraiser for the restoration of
the Leaskdale Manse. The
Leaskdale Manse was where LMM lived 1911-1926 and is in the process of becoming a
museum. We raised $250 Canadian dollars which was donated in March 1997.
**In the summer of 1997, we set up a fundraiser to raise money to buy one meter of the
Trans Canada Trail in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. The Trans Canada Trail is
a trail that reaches from one end of Canada to the other. Meters are sold and the
purchasers have phrases or names of their choice engraved on a pavilion along
the trail. The fundraiser was more
successful than expected~~we were able to buy two meters! As voted on by the donors,
the phrases engraved on the plaque in the trail pavilion are "The Avonlea Spectacle"
and "To Undiscovered Kindreds". Be sure to look for them next summer when you are
on the trail!
**In late summer 1998, as part of our licensing by the estate of
L.M. Montgomery, we donated $50.00 US to the publication Canadian Children's Literature.
**We supported the restoration of Green Gables on Prince Edward Island after the May 1997
fire.
**We have financially invested in the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television, further
supporting the production of works based on L.M. Montgomery's novels.
**We are still actively raising funds for the Leaskdale Manse Museum and will be making
a donation during the 1999 fiscal year.
