Chakotay is marooned on an unknown planet where the two inhabiting alien life forms are attempting planet-wide genocide against each other. Chakotay is captured by one of the tribes and comes to sympathize with them and their battle for survival against a ferocious enemy.

Trivia

	Many scenes for this episode were shot on location on the Warner Ranch.
	The episode deals with the psychology of warfare and was originally called "The Recruit."
	Executive Producer Jeri Taylor: "[Kenneth Biller]'s written it in a very interesting and original fashion. It's a story about how people can be taught to hate, about propaganda, and about how wars can come out of a conscious attempt to impose hate in people. It's one of those stories that makes you think a little bit. I was terribly pleased with that [episode]."
