Sarah Polley plays

- When Sara Stanley's
father finds himself the central figure in an embezzlement scandal, he sends his daughter
and her nanny to live with Sara's deceased mother's relatives in the town of Avonlea on
Prince Edward Island. Learning to adjust to her relatives' ways is difficult, and Sara's
cousins resent her privileged upbringing. When they trick Sara, she seeks the help of the
local "witch," Peg Bowan, who counsels her to use "trickery of the
mind" to get even. When there is no room for Sara and Nanny Banks at her Uncle Alec's
farm, they are sent to stay at Rose Cottage with Sara's aunts, Hetty and Olivia. Hetty
sends Nanny Banks back to Montreal, and Sara is left alone with her two aunts.

The Story
Girl Earns Her Name
- Sara
inadvertently helps a con man skip town with school library funds. In an attempt to redeem
herself, she holds a Magic Lantern Show to raise money. The show is a great success, until
Sara's rival, Sally Potts, pushes the Magic Lantern over the town hall balcony, causing a
fire. Jasper, the town recluse who had loaned the projector, is blamed for the fire, but
Sara and the other children force a confession from Sally by making her walk a gangplank
over a pond full of blood-suckers. A local philanthropist is so moved by Sara's rendition
of "The Little Match Girl" that he makes a substantial donation to the library
fund, and Sara becomes know in Avonlea as "The Story Girl."

The Proof
of the Pudding
- When Felicity is left
alone with her brother, sister, and Sara for two days, she learns that there is more to
being in charge than knowing how to bake a cherry pie. Her "know-it-all"
attitude provokes the others, and there is instant mayhem. Felix eats berries that might
be poisonous, Sara's new velvet shoes get spoiled, and sawdust inadvertently gets into the
pudding.

Quarantine
at Alexander Abraham's
- Mrs. Rachel Lynde goes
to Alexander Abraham's farm to find a boy missing from her Sunday School class. Knowing
she's on her way, Sara and Felix go to warn the boy. All three arrive at the farm, only to
discover the boy is no longer living there, and "old man Abraham" has smallpox.
Abraham, a confirmed bachelor and woman- hater, is not too happy at being put under
quarantine with Rachel and the two children. Rachel overcomes her distaste at being kept
in a dirty house with the old man and his filthy dog and nurses Abraham through his
illness.

Aunt
Abigail's Beau
- Aunt Abigail, Janet
King's spinster sister, is visited by her former suitor, Malcolm McPherson, who has
returned from the Yukon a wealthy man. He sets about wooing the prim Abigail, but his
proposal is refused, and he leaves town disheartened, having nearly destroyed the
organized tidiness of her world with his manly ways. Sara and Felicity become instrumental
in making Abigail realize that she has been very foolish. She rushes off in time to beg
Malcolm not to leave her again.

Abigail and gets an instant family when an orphaned infant is found in a basket by

- Sara and her cousins
intrude on the property of old Miss Lloyd, renowned as an eccentric, and supposedly the
wealthiest resident of Avonlea. Sara is caught by the old woman, and, much to Sara's
surprise, she finds that Miss Lloyd is not the wealthy recluse that people say she is, but
rather a poor and lonely woman. Sara discovers that Miss Lloyd seems to be very intrigued
with Sylvia Gray, a struggling singer who is visiting Aunt Olivia and participating in a
singing competition. Sara later learns that Sylvia Gray is the orphaned daughter of Miss
Lloyd's ex-suitor. Sara challenges Miss Lloyd to help Sylvia when Sylvia misses her big
break in the singing contest. Miss Lloyd swallows her pride and walks to Charlottetown on
a cold, wet night, and in the process is forced to realize how her stubborn willfulness
has almost destroyed her life. She asks her wealthy cousin Mr. Cameron for his assistance
so that Sylvia can complete her musical education.

the King farm attic captivates the imaginations of Felix and Andrew. Felix convinces
himself that there are ghosts in the attic and accidentally discovers a budding romance

Alec King is
Avonlea's resident cricket champion in the annual cricket match, and the entire town is
cheering for him. The solidarity of the King family is threatened, however, when Felicity
develops a crush on the visiting team's champion, David Hawes. Felix and Sara meet a
friendly fellow by the name of Gus Pike, and they bring him home to work temporarily on
the King Farm. Felicity experiences her first kiss - but not from David Hawes!

- Young Andrew King is
ecstatic when his father, Roger King, returns from a geological expedition in Brazil. Only
Roger's brother, Alec King, is less than delighted at Roger's return. The brothers'

reclusive, retired sea captain, gives young Gus Pike a job in the old lighthouse.
Ezekiel's former shipmate and Gus's father, Abe Pike, arrives, a fugitive from justice who
has ruthlessly eliminated his pursuers. When Abe turns against Ezekiel, the King children
fear for Ezekiel's life and tell the grownups all they know about the criminal. A search
is mounted, and Abe, determined to save his own skin, takes his son Gus as hostage.

- When Sara finds a gold
Spanish coin on the beach, Ezekiel Crane tells her that the island is full of buried
pirate treasure. Hetty believes there's treasure buried near Rose Cottage, and Rachel
Lynde is certain that treasure is hidden beneath the church. Ezekiel confides in Gus Pike
that he and an old shipmate each possess half a map to the real treasure, but neither of
them wants to share with the other.

led by Gus's father, Abe Pike.

must face the music of Sara's deception and set things right.

new vampire bat. Sara Stanley has been reading "Dracula," and she and her cousin
Felix suspect Jasper is a vampire and begin spying on him. A fellow bat researcher and the
editor of the "Journal of the Royal Naturalist Society," Sydney Carver comes to
Avonlea to meet Jasper and learn about his theory that bats navigate by echo location. To
the surprise of both Jasper and Olivia, Sydney turns out to be a woman -- and she is
attracted to Jasper. Although Jasper thinks of Sydney only as a scientist, Olivia is
jealous, and the town gossips talk when Jasper and Sydney spend so much time together.
Aunt Hetty attempts to tutor Olivia in science so she can compete with Sydney for Jasper's
attention. Hoping to verify their vampire theory, Sara and Felix follow the two bat
enthusiasts when they take a nighttime trip to a cave to photograph the bats, and Olivia
builds up the courage to follow as well. She arrives in time to hear Jasper tell Sydney
that their association is strictly professional and that he is happily married. Felix and
Sara have to be rescued from the cave - and are reprimanded by Aunt Hetty. The next day,
Sydney leaves after telling Olivia how fortunate she is.

Mori
- With Hetty in
Charlottetown for a meeting with her publishers, the King family prepares a surprise
fiftieth birthday party for her. But in Charlottetown, Hetty's publishers tell her they
think her writing is stale and terminate her contract. Hetty, suffering from an upset
stomach and a deflated ego, returns early to Avonlea. She refuses to budge when Sara tries
to entice her to her surprise birthday party, so the Kings bring the party to her, only to
discover she has collapsed on the floor. Hetty undergoes an emergency appendectomy and,
two weeks later, finally has her party. With a new lease on life, Hetty regains some of
the youthful abandon she had lost. She decides to stop writing pulp fiction, and instead
to write about what she knows best -- her love for the beauty of the island.

Modern
Times
- Jasper and Olivia
decide to modernize Avonlea's cannery with assembly-line techniques. However, Jasper's
lack of appropriate management experience is apparent. When a bunch of bickering employees
threaten to jeopardize the cannery's success, Gus and the King family pitch in to lend
their support. After a few false starts, the production line finally speeds along, and
with Gus and the King family helping, all the lobster is canned. Jasper and Olivia make
such a good profit that Hetty, heavily prompted by Jasper, insists the couple buy the
cannery for themselves.

Fathers
and Sons
- Felix is caught
between a rock and a hard place. His father gives him more chores around the farm to
prepare him for the day when he will take over. Felix's boss at the hotel, Mr. Tremayne,
has assigned him to take special care of a particularly obnoxious guest, millionaire
clothier Samuel Boddin. Felix loves his job at the hotel and is saving money to fulfill
his dream of owning his own tea room. He can't bring himself to tell Alec that he doesn't
want to take over the farm. As he tries to please everyone, he ends up pleasing no one.
His chores are shoddily done, and mistakes are made at the hotel. At his wit's end, Felix
unhappily quits working at the hotel. Alec urges Felix back to his job, realizing his
son's happiness comes first.

A Friend
in Need
- Sara volunteers to
take care of Davey and Dora at Rose Cottage as a favor because she mistakenly believes
that Rachel Lynde's son is in jail. Sara's best intentions are challenged, however, when
Davey's unruly behavior leads Sara to discover his secret.

Stranger
in the Night
- An itinerant farmhand
takes shelter from a rainstorm in the King barn, and Alec hires him for a few days of
work, even though Caleb is mysterious about his past. Caleb saves Daniel from an accident,
and Olivia photographs Caleb for a front-page story. Traveling salesman William McMillan,
who has been searching for Caleb since his parents lost their life savings to Caleb's
mining company, sees the picture and physically attacks Caleb in town. Caleb's past is
revealed: He spent five years in prison for fraud. He sold his family farm to pay back his
investors, but there wasn't enough to repay everyone. Since then, his past has prevented
him from holding a job. Caleb declines Alec's offer of a permanent job, not wanting to
bring danger to the Kings. But Alec's confidence in him gives Caleb the courage to start a
new life in the U.S., where nobody knows him.

The Great
Race
- Janet King won't allow
Felix to enter the steeplechase, fearing he will get hurt, but Felix goes against his
mother's wishes and trains for the race. When he is injured in a fall, he becomes afraid
of horses -- duplicating his mother's own childhood experience. Janet allows him to enter
the race if he overcomes his fears and gets back on the horse. After tying for first
place, Felix agrees to donate his winnings to the school book fund, if his mother will
overcome her own fears and ride the horse.

Someone
to Believe In
- Felix is smitten with
Adeline Hodgson, the daughter of a visiting politician who works on Alec to run for
office, even if it means he has to buy votes to get elected. When thefts occur at the
hotel, Felix realizes that Adeline is the thief and confronts her father. After Mr.
Hodgson tries to buy Felix's silence, the police dismiss the thefts as a prank, and Felix
thinks he has ruined Alec's political chances. Alec assures his son that raising his
children to have integrity is a more important contribution to life than any he could make
in political office.

Strictly
Melodrama
- It is time for the
annual drama competition on Prince Edward Island, and, despite 22 consecutive losses,
Hetty King, playwright and director, is determined that 23 will be a lucky number. This
year, if Avonlea does not win, Hetty must divulge the secret family recipe for the famous
King cranberry pie to her arch rival, Eleanor McHugh. Muriel Stacey will play the lead,
and Janet King, who usually prompts, has asked for a small role. When Muriel is suddenly
called away to tend her sick brother, Janet lands the lead. But not for long. Isabelle
Carrington, star of the European and New York stage, arrives in Avonlea to hide from a
scandal, and Hetty enlists her to play the lead. Hetty soon regrets ever laying eyes on
the actress, as Isabelle's demands and ego become overwhelming. The final straw comes when
Isabelle rewrites Hetty's script and Hetty explodes. Isabelle quits, and Hetty must eat
humble pie and ask Janet back. Janet enjoys her rare position of power over Hetty for a
moment before accepting. Avonlea goes on to win the drama competition and the secret
recipe to McHugh's famous apple strudel.

shocked and frightened when Cecily becomes seriously ill and is diagnosed with
tuberculosis. Janet won't hear of sending Cecily to a sanitarium and cares for her at home
until she becomes exhausted. Muriel advises a frightened Felicity to learn as much as she
can about the disease and takes her to the Charlottetown library. They discover that a
leading TB researcher lives nearby. Dr. Jones, a woman, tells Felicity about the
increasingly successful treatment of TB patients at sanitariums in drier climates.
Felicity attempts to convince Janet that Cecily's recovery chances would be better at a
sanitarium. Janet and Alec eventually decide to send Cecily away, accompanied by Janet.
Meanwhile, Dr. Jones has inspired Felicity to go to medical school rather than teacher's
college.

- When Davey visits
Jasper's workshop, things go awry, and, as a lucky result, Jasper invents a remarkable
hard plastic ("Jasperite"). Jasper enlists his businessman cousin, Jeremiah, to
help sell it. Jeremiah convinces everyone in town to invest, including Hetty. Olivia
becomes suspicious when she discovers that Jeremiah has had shady dealings in the past.

determined to bid on Davey Keith; and Aunt Hetty is unexpectedly matched with her business

- While attending
medical school in Halifax, Felicity meets Gus unexpectedly. Together, they discover a
strange street woman, Eliza, whom Gus believes is his mother, previously thought to be
dead. Risking her career, Felicity follows Gus and Eliza to Avonlea, where they unlock the
clues to the past. They discover that Eliza is indeed Gus's mother, and she and Gus travel
to the Caribbean to find out more about her dark past. Before leaving, Gus once again asks
Felicity to marry him.

- Cecily is quarantined
at a New York sanitarium with tuberculosis. She becomes increasingly pessimistic about her
treatment, until she meets a young boy, a poor New York orphan named Louie. They become
close friends while getting into a series of troubles. Eventually, Alec and Janet are
called to the sanitarium and told that Cecily will be discharged if her behavior does not
improve. Tragically, Louie dies soon after they arrive, but not before he makes Cecily
promise to fight for her own recovery.

Trouble With Davey
- Rachel Lynde is the
victim of a sudden stroke and is sent out West to recover with her son, Robert. Left
behind in Avonlea, Davey and Dora are sent to live with Hetty at Rose Cottage, but trouble
erupts as Davey becomes increasingly rebellious. Hetty struggles to find the cause of his
problems, and Davey eventually reveals that he feels responsible for Rachel's stroke. With
the help of an errant bull, Davey, Dora, and Hetty find a common ground and agree to work
together to make Rose Cottage their home.

- Davey defiantly
refuses to return to school. Hoping to change his mind, Hetty uses reverse psychology and
agrees to allow him to join the workforce. She recruits Jasper Dale to be part of her
scheme and asks him to give Davey a job at the Dale Cannery -- and teach him the real
meaning of work. Jasper and Davey, however, become friends, and Hetty's plan backfires
when Davey announces that he loves his job. Jasper must convince Davey of the need for an
education, without sacrificing the bond they have created.

- Avonlea's White Sands
Hotel is the site for an elegant royal wedding joining together the son of the Countess
Polenska and the daughter of Maggie MacPhee. Maggie is anxious to see the White Sands,
which she believes is owned by her son Pierre La Pierre. But not all is as it seems. The
Countess is completely broke, with only her title to give her son, and Maggie discovers
that her Pierre is merely the hotel's chef. At the same time, Felix is failing in school
and in the eyes of his teacher, Aunt Hetty, who believes he is spending far too much time
working at the Hotel. When the King family discovers the mix-up, they come to the rescue,
and the royal wedding comes off beautifully, with the young couple, though poor, joined
happily in love.

Tale
- Felix King, who is
always searching for a new money-making scheme, wants to start his own fox farm with Izzy
as his partner. Learning that he needs an adult co-signer for his bank loan, Felix shrugs
aside his arrangement with Izzy to enlist Nat Lester as his new business partner. Although
Felix works hard to make their enterprise a success, Nat lives the high life on borrowed
money, squandering away the loan. When the foxes escape, Felix and Nat are faced with a
debt neither is able to repay. Felix must find a way to clear his debt and also mend his
friendship with Izzy.

Things Change
- Clive and Muriel
announce their upcoming marriage to Clive's children, Izzy and Arthur. Though fond of
Muriel, Izzy becomes resentful of Muriel's relationship with her father. When Izzy makes
her feelings known, Muriel cancels the wedding. Izzy must come to terms with the changes
that are inevitable when starting a new family and convince both Muriel and Clive to marry
after all. Meanwhile, Davey is deceived by a couple of street urchins into believing that
money put under a tombstone on the night of a full moon will double in worth. Convinced of
the superstition, Davey steals the money the class has saved to buy Muriel and Clive a
wedding present. When he loses it in the scam, Dora and Wiley Lester help him get the
money back in time for the wedding.

- Aunt Eliza takes
Daniel on a vacation, leaving time for a "second honeymoon" for Janet and Alec.
Alec, however, is busy tending the farm and with his involvement in the secret Loyal Order
of The Knights of Prince Edward Island. With Felicity, Cecily, and Daniel away and Felix
working overtime at the hotel, Janet experiences the empty-nest syndrome. Spurred on by an
ad promising added income, she agrees to work at home for the ACME Company -- without
telling Alec. The trials of commerce turn to farce when Janet comes head-to-head with the
shrewd owner of the ACME Company.

- Having recovered from
her stroke, Rachel Lynde journeys back from her son's home in Saskatoon. But her return is
marred when she suffers a second, debilitating stroke on the train ride home, leaving her
unable to speak. Once Rachel's back in Avonlea, Hetty is determined to nurse her life-long
friend back to health. When Rachel's son learns of her second stroke, he cables Hetty that
he is coming to take his mother away for good. Knowing that Rachel is the only one who can
convince her son to allow her to stay, Hetty, Davey, Dora, and Pierre La Pierre struggle
to teach Rachel to speak again before her son arrives.

first year of medical school with excellent marks, Felicity takes an apprenticeship with
Dr. Snow. Following the doctor from one medical emergency to another, Felicity learns that

avert a tragedy, despite his knowledge and skill, Felicity wonders whether she has chosen
the wrong profession and whether she really wants to continue with her medical studies.

- The King family is elated when they
learn that Cecily's tuberculosis is dormant and she is well enough to come home. Alec and
Janet go to pick Cecily up at the sanitarium, but their joy is tempered by the doctor's

apparent that neither her parents nor her community believe that she has actually
recovered. Meanwhile, Felicity is trying to cope with the aftermath of dropping out of
medical school and receives some devastating news about Gus that leaves her life in a
shambles.

Out of
the Ashes
- One year has passed
since Felicity learned that Gus drowned. She has changed, become melancholy. There is a
friendly new gentleman in town, named Stuart McRae, who is the town banker. Felicity
attends a town meeting with her family, and is unwillingly chosen for a position on a
committee, whose task it is to assess the old Lloyd mansion, which has been donated to the
town. When the committee inspects the house, they find four run-away orphans living there,
who are starved and unkempt. Nobody wants the orphans, but Felicity decides to take them
in. She wants to turn the old house into a foundling home. Many of the townspeople are
against this at first, but with Stuart's help, Felicity is able get enough votes and
so the Avonlea Foundling Home is established. Stuart has feelings for Felicity, and he
helps her to overcome her heartache.

Love
May Be Blind...but the Neighbors Ain't
There is great excitement in Avonlea as Dominion Day approaches, for
the town will celebrate by having a Presbyterian Youth Picnic. Felix acts on his feelings
for Izzy, but she is unsure and feels pressured. When confronted by some of the boys in
town, Felix indicates that there was more than friendship between himself and Izzy. When
Izzy discovers his deceit, his relationship with her is placed in jeopardy. Olivia becomes
upset with Jasper when he tells her that he wants to go to England to teach. Felicity
accepts Stuart's proposal of marriage.

Davey
and the Mermaid
Davey attends Snibb's Travelling Midway Fair, which has come to Avonlea. He
becomes smitten with Melusina the Mermaid. However, he finds himself in danger when he
discovers that Melusina is a fraud and Snib and his group intend to double cross the
citizens of Avonlea.

of Importance
Izzy feels depressed at lonely
after dealing with Felix's dishonesty. She also feels that she doesn't belong at home with
her father, Clive Pettibone and Muriel Stacey, as the two are now married. Her glamorous
aunt, Lillian Hepworth arrives in Avonlea - although she is not all she appears to be.
Lillian gives Izzy advice, which causes conflict between Izzy, her father, and Muriel.
When Lillian's past is uncovered, Lillian realizes that it is time for her to take
responsibility for her own actions in life. This, in turn, leads Izzy to re-think her
behavior and to accept that she is a young woman who has to make difficult decisions of
her own.

Secrets
and Sacrifices
Abigail, Janet's sister, and her husband return to Avonlea after a long
absence. This causes conflict within the King family. Alec decides to surprise Janet for
their anniversary with a gift of a new ring. Unbeknownst to her, he takes her wedding ring
to the jeweler in order to get the correct size for the new ring. But confusion reigns
when she discovers that the ring is missing, and both Alec and Janet hide the truth from
each other.

Sweet Mystery of Life
Love abounds in Avonlea as Hetty
King and Simon Tremayne announce their wedding plans. The Avonlea School's future is
threatened with closure when a new District Superintendent arrives. If this happens, Hetty
would have to teach in Carmody the following year. This puts Hetty in a panic and she
works feverishly with the children, in order that they win a scholastic competition
against Carmody. If they win, the school will be allowed to remain open. Hetty's wedding
plans dissolve as she is consumed with her new problem.

King of
the Great White Way
A famous Broadway song-writing
team, Rudy and Betty Blaine, checks into the White Sands Hotel. Hetty is indifferent to
them, and then she learns that they had once performed for King George of England. This
changes her attitude completely. She soon organizes a musicale, hoping to attract some
royalty. Alec displays a talent for singing.

Eclipse
While Janet is away in
Charlottetown, a solar eclipse brings people from all over to Avonlea to witness the
event. The White Sands Hotel is fully booked. Cecily accidentally sets fire to a
large amount of money, which is meant for charity. Felix concocts scheme to return
the money by renting out rooms at the King Farm. Janet returns earlier than expected to
discover strangers in her home.
Episode 9
From
Away
Brett and Ian, two English orphans, come to live at the Avonlea Foundling
Home. They are hostile and when Davey tries to befriend them, it only causes trouble. He
learns their secret - that they have been mistreated - and he steals money from Aunt Hetty
to help them run away and find their brother.
Episode 10
After
the Ball is Over
It's Aunt Eliza's 90th
birthday and a big celebration is planned. Cousin Winnifred comes to town, but she is very
difficult and suffers from incredible mood-swings and delusions, which causes turmoil
within the family. She finally reveals an old secret to Eliza, about Eliza's long lost
love. One night, after she gets lost in the snow, they discover that all is not well with
Winnifred.

Return
to Me
It is one week before Felicity is due to marry Stuart McRae, but she receives
a mysterious phone call from Charleston, South Carolina. The call leads Felcity to believe
that Gus alive. Knowing that she cannot continue with her life until she knows for sure,
Felicity leaves for Charleston with Aunt Hetty. After a long and tiring journey, they
arrive in Charleston, only to suffer one disappointment after another. They are almost
ready to give up hope, when Felicity discovers that Gus is alive. She is heartbroken to
learn that Gus has lost his sight, but she is determined to return to Avonlea with him.
Episode 12
The
Last Hurrah
Alec, Stuart and Jasper (who has returned from England) are at odds with
Eulalie Bugle and Archie Gillis, who are campaigning to combine with Carmody. The final
vote is in Alec's favour, but things take a turn for the worst when the Dale Cannery is
destroyed by fire.
Episode 13
So Dear
to My Heart
Everyone is shocked when Felicity and Hetty return to Avonlea with
Gus. Felicity has yet to tell Gus about Stuart. She also has to break her engagement with
Stuart. Stuart is heartbroken, and leaves town. Hetty is dismayed as changes are sweeping
through Avonlea. Olivia and Jasper decide not to re-build the Dale Cannery after all, and
announce that they plan to leave Avonlea for good. Felix is bored with working at the
hotel and joins the Navy. In a fit of temper, Hetty stubbornly refuses to attend Gus and
Felicity's wedding, but Felicity has other ideas. A surprise visit from Sara Stanley
completes this wonderful tale.

- The Christmas Movie
Based on the Emmy Award-winning series Road
To Avonlea, Happy Christmas, Miss King pays tribute to the indomitable Hetty King, who
winds up hospitalized during the holiday season. There, homesick and alone she begins to
reevaluate her life.
The story takes place against the backdrop of World War I as the entire King family
prepares to join together for their traditional Christmas dinner. Differences of opinion
over the war effort become glaringly obvious and start to tear the family and town apart.
Matriarch Hetty King, long known to be a staunch supporter of 'King and country',
stoically continues with holiday preparations despite the atrocities being reported from
the battlefield. But Hetty's sister-in-law, Janet, is unable to remain as detached about
the casualties of war as she worries about her son Felix, who is fighting overseas. Heated
debates amongst the local townsfolk over the necessity of war ensue, and Janet finds
herself isolated, as the only proponent of peace.
When Hetty's family learns about the illness that has taken her to the hospital, they rush
to her bedside. In an unexpected show of support, the people of Avonlea also rally
together to serenade her.
Happy Christmas, Miss King touches on the fragility of life and the importance of
relationships. It deals with the age-old dilemma of following one's heart or adhering to
tradition. Above all, this wonderful and accomplished cast comes together in an uplifting
drama that illustrates the strength of family in turbulent times.
A true Avonlea Christmas is had by all when Hetty recovers and the King family is finally
reunite.
