This long-running series is based on four books by much-loved Green Gables author Lucy Maud Montgomery - Chronicles, Further Chronicles of Avonlea, The Golden Road and The Story Girl - and features young actress Sarah Polley.

The series opens with wealthy Montreal businessman and widower Blair Stanley caught up with financial problems which threaten to ruin his reputation and jeopardise his relationship with his young daughter, Sara. In order to protect her from the prying eyes of the media and the encroaching scandal, Blair uproots Sara from her comfortable and elegant surroundings and reluctantly sends her to live with his late wife's estranged relatives in the small and remote farming community of Avonlea on Prince Edward Island.

Sara must live with two spinster aunts: the prickly and imperious school teacher, Aunt Hetty, and the more sympathetic Aunt Olivia. Sara makes extraordinary adjustments to life in a rural environment, but still finds herself out of place, homesick and resented by her country cousins, Felicity, Felix and Cecily King. But Sara soon proves to be both feisty and resilient and she slowly wins them over and becomes the focal point for mischief and adventure in Avonlea.
