When the Avonlea Cannery goes up for sale Hetty buys it and agrees to let Olivia and Jasper run the cannery. After a few false starts and with help from the King family, the Dales manage to can all the lobster, making a good profit. Hetty insists Jasper and Olivia buy the cannery from her.

A Friend in Need

Sara discovers that the cause of Davey's bad behavior at school is because he can't read or write. Together they embark on teaching Davey to learn both. In addition, Olivia finds out that Izzy doesn't always want to dress like a tomboy, and Rachel Lynde visits her son, whom everyone believes is in jail.

Strictly Melodrama

Avonlea is hosting the annual drama competition and Hetty plans to win. She makes a wager with Eleanor McHugh, betting a secret family recipe. After asking Janet to play the lead role, Hetty callously recasts the role offering it to Isabelle Carrington, famous stage actress. However, Isabelle haughty attitude becomes too much and Hetty fires her. To get out of an impossible situation, Hetty pleads for Janet to reaccept the lead role.

The Great Race

Felix wants to enter a steeplechase, but Janet, fearing for his safety, forbids him to enter the event. When Felix is injured in a fall he becomes afraid of his horse, similar to an event Janet had in her childhood. Janet eventually allows him to enter the race so he will overcome his fear.

Stranger in the Night

Alec hires itinerant farmhand Caleb to help around the farm. Very little is known about Caleb until he is attacked by victims of a fraudulent scheme from his past and the truth is revealed. Alec realizes Caleb has paid his debt to society and offers Caleb full time work, but he declines, knowing that he would bring danger to the King household.

Someone to Believe In

Mr. Hodgson, a visiting politician, asks Alec to run for office, and Felix is smitten with his daughter, Adeline Hodgson. When items start disappearing at the hotel, new waiter Elbert is suspected, until Felix discovers Adeline is to blame. When Mr. Hodgson tries to buy Felix' silence, Alec declines to run for office.

Thursday's Child

The King family is shocked when Cecily becomes ill with tuberculosis. When Janet realizes she will be unable to nurse Cecily back to health by herself, a nearby doctor convinces Janet that Cecily should be moved to a sanitorium where the girl will have a much better chance to recover.

Best Laid Plans

By accident, Jasper invents a remarkably hard plastic. He enlists the help of his look-alike cousin, Jeremiah, to help market the new discovery. However, Jeremiah gets everyone to invest in a fraudulent scheme before he plans to skip town.

Otherwise Engaged

Gus is promoted to assistant manager at the hotel, Felicity is accepted to medical school, and both have to make some of the hardest decisions of their lives. Meanwhile, Izzy engineers a date between her father and Muriel Stacey with the help of Davey and Dora.

Enter Prince Charming

The Minister's Wife

Janet gets into all sorts of trouble with Viola, the minister's wife, who is a bit eccentric. In addition, the minister tries to add humor to his sermons, much to the town's disapproval, and Sara and Booth attempt to spend time together, but are hindered by Hetty's constant interfering presence.
