Jasper's eccentric relatives come to Avonlea for a family reunion, but they come to odds with the Kings as to how Olivia's new baby will be raised. Olivia flees the bickering relatives, but premature labor puts the child at risk.
Hetty takes a sabbatical from teaching to help Olivia raise her new baby. Surprisingly, Clive Pettibone, the new teacher, and Hetty share many similar ideas how to teach.
Felix sneaks off with Alec's rifle on a secret hunting expedition and accidently shoots, Digger, the King family dog, leaving him gravely wounded. The family turns to Arthur Pettibone, an inexperienced veterinary student, to save the beloved animal.
Alec voices his opinion that Avonlea needs a volunteer fire department, but it is Clive Pettibone who is elected fire chief. When Felix's science experiment gets out of hand, Alec and Clive rush to the rescue.
Marshal Zak Morgan and his "Wild West Show" arrive in Avonlea and Sara surprises everyone with her rodeo skills. However, her feelings for Zak grow and she learns her first painful lesson in love.
Since Alec could not save his boyhood friend Emmett from a tragic boating accident, Alec is plagued with unrelenting guilt. He takes it upon himself to care for Emmett's young widow, unwittingly causing tension with his family and gossip in town.
Felicity conceives of an elaborate scheme enabling her to spend an evening alone with Gus Pike. However, when Alec and Janet discover her plan they are furious, Gus' reputation is in doubt, and Sara gets caught in the crossfire.

They attempt to raise funds with a Valentine's Day dance, but an unannounced health inspection spells disaster. Furthermore, a flirtatious French mademoiselle pursues Gus Pike.
Felicity asks Sara to help her choose between two beaus. However, what starts out as mere flattery for Felicity, eventually becomes a much more serious matter when Gus proposes marriage.
An antiques appraiser comes to Avonlea and the town is in a frenzy when they discover their old junk may be valuable. However, when the appraiser and the antiques disappear, and a woman arrives in Avonlea seeking her missing heir, it's up to Sara to discover the secrets to their disappearance.
Sara helps Jasper by arranging for him to test a movie camera for the Edison Company. The resulting movie about Avonlea helps the townsfolk to decide whether or not they should sell out to an ambitious American industrialist.
Felix and Sara's science project helps to save the King farm's baby lambs. Furthermore, great Aunt Eliza's surprise visit strains Janet's nerves and disrupts the entire household.
