At last, however, Timofeyev believes he is cured and has even discussed being discharged from hospital. But there are disturbing signs that Timofeyev has not yet completely recovered!
Records show that each year, on the anniversary of the deaths, Timofeyev develops a sympathetic wound or illness. Fascinated with his patient's condition, Smirnov, his doctor, convinces Timofeyev to take on the role of Nicholas' killer. Caught up in this experiment, Smirnov loses touch with reality and assumes the role of the Tsar himself. Soon both doctor and patient have slipped into their fantasy and the spell is not broken until both relive the terrible events of July 1918.

When Mary (SUSAN GEORGE), a brilliant, volatile artist, and her husband Malcolm (BEN CROSS) return one night to their beautiful, isolated house in Brittany to find a sumptuous meal laid out for them, at first they attribute it to the other. However, it soon becomes clear that the meal was the work of a mysterious, unidentifiable "third party".
Within a mater of days, other strange things begin to happen in the house - items go missing, the phone lines go dead, someone or something mysteriously begins to help Mary finish her paintings - and the only explanation Mary can find is that the house is haunted. Malcolm, on the other hand, is quietly convinced that the events are Mary's pathetic cry for attention.
