According to Kevin Sullivan, as quoted in "The Lucy Maud Montgomery Album", the U.S. based Disney Channel, which paid for about two-thirds of the production costs, pushed for a considerable number of guest stars. In 1994, however, Sullivan explained, "I never felt the guest star episodes were the best episodes. We always have to write a story for them so that they'd be interested enough to appear on TV. And because of that, the regular characters were always neglected." Beginning with season 5, the amount of guest stars decreased and the show began to focus more on the relationships of the regulars.
