Watching Love Grow:
The Romance of Felicity & Gus really began in Season Two, when Gus came to Avonlea, and Felicity, wondering if she
will die without ever being kissed, receives her first, from young Gus. Although this romance was a bit one-sided, on Gus's part,
for quite a while, the earnest and hardworking Gus soon began to win over the prideful and sometimes arrogant Felicity's heart.
Alas, the course of true love never runs smoothly and there were several misunderstandings and broken
engagements between the couple, until Felicity finally agreed to marry Gus and settle down to life in Avonlea...then
fate dealt a cruel blow to the young couple, when Gus's ship went down in the Atlantic and all hands were accounted
as lost.
...time passed and Felicity was finally convinced to move on with her life, and she accepted the proposal of the
kindly banker, Stuart McRae, who had fallen in love with Felicity as they worked together to build the Avonlea Foundling
Home. A phone call from the Carolinas, mere weeks before their wedding, sparked something in the heart
of Felicity that she thought had been set aside. Hope. Gus was alive! Once again, Felicity and Gus faced an unsure future, but this time
it was Felicity who was the more mature, and Gus, surprisingly, behaving in a stubborn and strong-willed manner. Alls well that ends well, however, and we leave Avonlea
with Gus and Felicity happily married and expecting the birth of their first child in the Spring.
The tune playing is "She's Like the Swallow", and old Canadian folk tune, that was Eliza Pike's favourite. For the lyrics, please click here. |
