The Plot

On the back of video-cover the following reads:

"Young Lucas Bienmann, an indentured servant in 19th century Prussia, witnesses a murder by the ruthless Count who frames Lucasī father for the crime. After helping his father escape, Lucas flees with the Countīs sister and her beautiful daughter Ursula to Canada, the home of his estranged grandfather. Disaster follows when Ursulaīs mother dies of smallpox and Ursula herself is kidnapped by con artists. Braving river rapids, Lucas rescues Ursula and the pair set out through the treacherous wilderness and across the savage American frontier, encountering many adventures before being reunited with their families."

I think, "By Way of the Stars" or " Der lange Weg des Lucas Bienmann"  is a truly tender story set in beautiful surroundings.  It is expecially fun for an "Avonlea"-fan, like myself,  to see many of my most beloved actors reunite and take on roles which are very similar to Avonlea.

The Cast

Zachary Bennet (Lucas Bienmann) is very sweet in this role. Gema Zamprogna (Ursula von Knabig)  outstanding in the movie!! Ursula treats Lucas badly in the beginning- very similar to the Felix/Felicity relationship. Michael Mahonenīs preformance was spottless, as usual.

My favorite part of the movie was the relationship between the very stuck-up Countess( Gema Zamprogna) and the handsome harmonica-player (Michael Mahonen). See more on this on Ben & Ursulaīs page

Other Avonlea-actors popped up in almost every scene:0) R.H. Thomson (Jasper Dale), David Fox (Clive Pettibone), Albert Millaire (Chef Pierre Lapierre) and the actor who played Mr Spry.

I must say that I really loved the German/French addition to the cast. I think Anja Kruse (Maria, Lucasīs mother) and Dominique Sanda ( Cristina, Ursulaīs mother) were just lovely. And speaking of lovely persons, Tantoo Cardinal(Franoise- the lady from the wagontrain), was just great and so likable.
