 Road to Avonlea
was an hour-long drama based on the works of Lucy Maud Montgomery.
Story Girl, The Golden Road, Chronicles of Avonlea and Further Chronicles
of Avonlea.
The year is 1903 and Blair Stanley is embroiled in a financial scandal. To protect
his daughter Sara (Polley), he sends her to live her deceased mothers relatives
on Prince Edward Island. Although she does not fit, in at the beginning she soon
makes friends with the rest of the King cousins, Felicity (Zamprogna), Felix
Cecily (Cramp/Atkinson) and Andrew (Blake). Soon she has the whole town
enchanted with her magnificent story telling capabilities.
The program highlighted the talents of many Canadian actors such as, Jackie
Burroughs, Mag Ruffman, Lally Cadeau, R.H Thomson, Colleen Dewhurst, and
Cedric Smith. Some notable guest stars included, Stockard Channing, Faye Dunaway,
Madeline Kahn, and Christopher Lloyd.
The series ended in 1996. Kevin Sullivan gave three reasons why he had pulled
the plug on the highly rated show. “All possible plot and story combinations had
been used and any new episodes would risk being redundant. Second, the cast
grew up ... Sullivan didn’t want to keep replacing older cast members with younger
ones.” The third and final reason that in a short time WW1 would begin and the
town would be so deeply affected that it would be forever changed. So in the
summer 1912 the wedding that all the fans had been waiting for took place and
ended the era of innocence.
