The World of Gus and Felicity
Felicity King and Gus Pike quickly became the focus of Avonlea after the third season. Fans followed their story with eager anticipation. They spent many episodes apart, and on a personal note, my heart was broken when it was learned that Gus had supposedly drowned at sea. I along with millions of others rejoiced when he came back during the final season, and what better way to end the series than with the wedding of Felicity and Gus.
In the early years of Avonlea, Felicity was
bossy, conceited, and self-centered. However, over the years she grew up to be a
charming, yet independent, young woman. She went through a period of self discovery-
she wanted to be a teacher, then a docter, and finally became the founder of the Avonlea
Foundling Home. Every time she gaver herself aires, she managed to fall back down to
the earth. Felicity was very human, and although she had her mistakes, she always
managed to overcome any problem set before her.
Gus Pike was a man of mystery. Throughout the show
his past was slowly revealed. His story was one of suspense, self discovery, and
tragedy. Gus was charming, and he played the fiddle beautifully. When Captain
Craine, the lighthouse keeper, asked him what he wanted most in the world, Gus responed,
"a home." From then on, his home was in the lighthouse. He first met
the King cousins in the episode entitled "How Kissing Was Discovered," and from
then on he was an integral part of the magic of Avonlea.
