A Family of Their Own, Part 3

"Whoa." Felix stopped the buggy outside the King Farm house. "You two, uh three, stay here. I'll go find mother."

Felicity and Gus watched nervously as Felix ran into the house.

"Mother, Mother, where are you?"

Felix ran from the entry way to the kitchen and back again.

Janet opened the door of the parlor and stared at her son. Over her shoulder Felix saw the members of the church sewing circle, including his Aunt Hetty, Rachel Lynde, and Clara Potts. They all stared at him as well.

"Felix, what is the matter?"

"Yes, Felix King, what is the meaning of you coming into this house screaming and running around like a banshee?" Hetty had risen from her seat and now stood next to her sister-in-law.

"Hetty, shush. Now, Felix, what happened?"

Felix was out of breath from the drive and running around the house.

"We were coming. . . buggy. . . Felicity. . . Gus. . . baby. . ."

Janet stepped forward and took her son's hand.

"OK, Felix, one more time. What about Felicity, Gus, and the baby?"

"We were on our way back from the station when Felicity grabbed Gus' knee and said the baby was coming."

Excited gasps could be heard from the women in the parlor.

Janet placed her free hand on her mouth and thought for a second.

"OK, Felix, go back outside. Tell Felicity I will be there in a second. Hetty, Alec is in the barn with Daniel and Cecily. Could you go get him, please?" Janet then turned to the women in the parlor. Tears filled her eyes. "Ladies, I'm sorry but it looks like we have to stop early today." Her voice broke. "I'm going to be a grandmother."

Janet nearly began to cry as the women began to clap.
